MEET YOUR HOST

Bettina McIlwraith is the founder and host of A4DInterwoven.

Her career spans 25 years working in fashion, interiors, styling, and creative direction, with a consistent focus on slow design, ethical production, and socially engaged craft. Bettina’s first job as a fashion buyer in the early 2000s evolved into a hands-on practice rooted in collaboration, storytelling, and cultural exchange across Australia, the UK, and East and West Africa.

From 2019 to 2020 Bettina lived and worked on the ground in northern Ghana where she was embedded with the Baba Tree Basket Company and the Gurunsi weavers. During this time, she collaborated closely with artisans on product development, basketry design, and creative direction, while also leading communications and storytelling to connect their work with a global network of galleries, designers, museums, and retailers. This role gave her a deep understanding of the cultural intelligence in craft traditions and the realities of the international artisan market.

Bettina returns to Ghana regularly, nurturing long-term relationships that extend well beyond individual projects. These partnerships are built on trust, respect, and shared creative process. They are the foundation of A4DInterwoven and shape the depth of access offered on each journey.

As your host, Bettina brings cultural fluency, creative insight, and a considered pace to each Journey. She leads with curiosity rather than spectacle, offering travelers the rare opportunity to engage meaningfully with creative communities, learn through experience, and encounter Ghana and Senegal through relationships that have been carefully built over time.
